For all the technological progress made in the last century, it seems we have an overabundance of data and very little in the way of actual information. The 116th Congress is making steady strides to implement an information-driven government, including modernization of the federal grant reporting process. Our grant reporting process should work for, not against, those advancing the public good. Rep. Foxx spearheads this effort with her bipartisan Grant Reporting Efficiency and Agreements Transparency (GREAT)Act, which would leverage data provided in grant reports to increase efficiency and transparency for the over $600 billion spent annually on federal grants. Making grant report information available in an open government data structure would alleviate grantee compliance burdens, provide insights for Congress and grant-making agencies, and facilitate program evaluation. The possibilities for government modernization are endless; now is a unique moment for recognizing tangible ways to bring grant reporting into the 21st Century. For all the technological progress made in the last century, it seems we have an overabundance of data and very little in the way of actual information.
